Pope Francis has died from a stroke and heart failure, the Vatican announced Monday.
He passed away at 7:35 a.m. on April 21, 2025, at his Vatican residence, Casa Santa Marta. A statement from Cardinal Kevin Farrell confirmed the cause of death as a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure.
The 88-year-old Pope had battled health issues for years, including a chronic lung condition. He was recently hospitalized for double pneumonia and spent 38 days at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
Despite his illness, he appeared briefly in public on Easter Sunday to bless worshippers in St. Peter’s Square, just a day before his passing.
