The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) is set to elect new leaders at its 3rd Quadrennial National Delegates Conference, with discussions expected to focus on unresolved issues including withheld salaries and unpaid allowances.
Outgoing president, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, highlighted at a weekend press briefing that the union’s grievances—such as the outstanding three-month salary arrears and N50 billion Earned Allowances—remain key talking points as the new leadership takes charge.
“This conference will address the issues impacting our members, with hopes for full resolution,” Ibrahim stated. He noted the government’s partial payment of one month’s salary but emphasized the need for full settlement.
He stressed the importance of honoring collective agreements to ensure stability within the university system and called for transparency in the upcoming electoral process, expressing confidence in the delegates’ choice of committed leaders.
The event, themed “Respecting Collective Bargaining Agreement and Industrial Peace in a Democracy,” aims to foster trust between the union and the federal government. Ibrahim urged members to remain united, emphasizing that their strength lies in solidarity as they continue to push for fair treatment and better working conditions in Nigeria’s educational sector.
