Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has withdrawn the proposed bill seeking to make voting compulsory in Nigeria.
In a statement by his media aide, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Abbas said the decision came after wide consultations with key stakeholders. The bill, co-sponsored with Hon. Daniel Adama Ago, aimed to amend the Electoral Act to boost voter turnout.
The Speaker said the bill was introduced with good intentions but acknowledged concerns about individual freedoms. He now plans to focus on encouraging voluntary participation through more inclusive and accessible voter engagement.
