The Nigerian Senate has established a committee, led by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), to address contentious issues in the recently proposed tax reform bills. Announcing the decision during Wednesday’s plenary, Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin (APC, Kano North) stated that the committee would consult with the Attorney General of the Federation, the executive, and other stakeholders before the bills proceed to a public hearing.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted four tax reform bills to the National Assembly on October 3, 2024, outlining their potential to enhance Nigeria’s fiscal institutions and align with his administration’s broader development goals. However, the bills have sparked opposition from various groups, including governors, traditional leaders, civil society organizations, and lawmakers, citing concerns over their implications.
In addition to Moro, the committee comprises Senators Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West), Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), and Abdullahi Yahaya (Kebbi North), among others. The committee is tasked with providing a comprehensive report before further legislative proceedings.
