A group of vulnerable Abuja residents, including scavengers, beggars, and petty traders, has filed a N500 million lawsuit against FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over alleged violations of their fundamental rights.

The suit, filed by legal practitioner Abba Hikima in public interest before Justice James Omotosho of a Federal High Court in Abuja, also lists the Inspector-General of Police, Director-General of the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and the Federal Government as co-respondents.

The lawyer is seeking an order awarding general and exemplary damages for what he described as unlawful arrests, detention without charges, harassment, and extortion of vulnerable persons in the FCT. He also seeks a public apology and policy reforms to protect their rights.

In court documents, Hikima alleged that security operatives, including police and military personnel, forcefully apprehended individuals perceived as homeless or economically disadvantaged during a joint task force operation on Ahmadu Bello Way in Abuja on November 12.

He said petty traders, roadside hawkers, and others conducting lawful businesses were harassed, threatened, and detained, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.

The suit calls for accountability and immediate reforms to protect the rights of vulnerable citizens.
