The House of Representatives will resume debate on President Tinubu’s tax reform bills today after suspending the session last November due to strong northern opposition.
A lawmaker from the North West confirmed that members will closely scrutinize the bills to ensure that none of the provisions harm the interests of northern citizens.
The debate follows a truce between the 19 northern state governors and President Tinubu, who endorsed a modified version of the legislation.
Under the revised proposal, the share of VAT revenue based on derivation has been reduced to 30%, with a new formula for a more equitable distribution among states.
The tax reform package—comprising the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, Tax Administration Bill, and related measures—was first transmitted to the National Assembly in September 2024 following recommendations by the Oyedele-led presidential committee.
