Report: 63% of Female Students Face Sexual Harassment

A recent report by Alliances for Africa (AFA) and the Committee of Gender Directors in Nigerian Universities (CGDNU) has revealed that 63% of female students across 12 Nigerian universities have experienced sexual harassment.

Speaking at a briefing in Abuja on Sunday, AFA’s Executive Director, Iheoma Obibi, highlighted the findings, which were part of the Campus Climate Survey Report on Sexual Harassment in Nigerian Tertiary Institutions: A Call for Immediate Action. Gender directors from various universities emphasized the pervasive nature of the issue, describing it as a betrayal of the trust placed in educational institutions as centres of growth and development.

The study involved 3,528 respondents across universities, including the University of Lagos, University of Abuja, Bayero University Kano, and the University of Jos, among others.

The coalition called for immediate reforms, urging universities to enforce zero-tolerance policies against sexual harassment and implement strict penalties for offenders to restore confidence in higher education systems.
