The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is holding a major meeting today at its national secretariat in Abuja as a leadership crisis continues to divide the party.
Two main factions have emerged over what the meeting should be. One group, made up of 11 members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), says it is the 100th meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and must go ahead as earlier agreed.
However, another group, including the acting national chairman Umar Damagum and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, insists it is an expanded national caucus meeting, not an NEC gathering. They say the meeting will involve a wider group of party leaders, including state chairmen, lawmakers, and former governors.
The conflict centres on Anyanwu’s return as national secretary and Damagum’s decision to postpone the NEC meeting. The 11 NWC members strongly oppose this and have the support of the party’s Board of Trustees.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu has backed the NEC meeting, saying the party must fix its problems or risk losing support in the Southeast.
Elder Timothy Osadolor, a member of the NEC, said today’s meeting is an expanded caucus session to help resolve the crisis. He said all key members had been invited.
Meanwhile, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who leads the PDP Reconciliation Committee, said the group is meeting with party leaders to restore peace and unity. He added that the dispute over the secretary’s position must be resolved so the party can prepare for the 2027 elections.
