Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, says the coalition of opposition leaders into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is a welcome development that could help prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party state.
Speaking after casting his vote in Surulere during the Lagos LG election on Saturday, Gbajabiamila said, “In every democracy, there must be opposition. Without it, we risk a one-party system. But I’m not sure where this coalition will lead.”
The opposition recently adopted the ADC as a platform to challenge President Tinubu in 2027.
On the local polls, Gbajabiamila praised the peaceful process but noted the low turnout, saying Nigerians need more awareness on the importance of grassroots elections.
While former APC chairman Abdullahi Ganduje once said a one-party state could emerge “by negotiation,” President Tinubu has ruled it out, insisting Nigeria will remain a multi-party democracy.
