The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) office of the National Population Commission (NPC) has launched the 2024 Verbal and Social Autopsy (VASA) study to investigate causes of under-five and maternal mortality. The initiative, running until December 15, 2024, will focus on selected communities across the six area councils in the FCT.
Speaking at the flag-off event, NPC Federal Commissioner Joseph Shazhin emphasized the importance of the survey, which builds on findings from the 2023-2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey. The data will explore health and social factors linked to these deaths and guide the development of effective health policies.
Shazhin called on community leaders and residents to support the study by cooperating with interviewers. He assured participants of confidentiality, highlighting their role in shaping policies to secure a healthier future for families.
This nationwide effort underscores Nigeria’s commitment to reducing preventable deaths and improving maternal and child health outcomes.
