The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced a nationwide initiative to translate tax reform bills into more than 36 local languages to counter widespread misconceptions and improve public understanding of the reforms.
At a press conference in Maiduguri, Borno State, Director-General Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, represented by Inuwa Yusuf Kobi, emphasized the importance of clearing misunderstandings about the bills and highlighted their benefits, particularly for low-income earners and small businesses.
He explained that businesses with annual turnovers below ₦50 million would be exempt from taxation under the proposed reforms. Furthermore, he noted that about 90% of workers in the public and private sectors, especially low-income earners, would no longer pay taxes, as the reforms aim to address multiple taxations and reduce the financial burden on citizens.
The NOA is engaging religious and traditional leaders to champion the sensitization campaign and convey accurate information to their communities. “Many of these leaders have realized the issue has been politicized but understand its potential benefits for the common man,” Kobi said.
The agency also called for public participation in nation-building, with the State Director of NOA, Michael Daniel Bdliya, emphasizing the importance of collaboration. “Building the Nigeria of our dreams requires collective responsibility,” Bdliya said, encouraging all citizens to support the campaign.
The NOA also used the platform to raise awareness about security consciousness, get-rich-quick schemes, and HIV/AIDS prevention, reaffirming its commitment to grassroots engagement through partnerships with the media and community stakeholders.
