The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says over 120 million Nigerians and legal residents have now been registered for the National Identity Number (NIN).
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote said the agency has upgraded its systems and reduced internal corruption by 40%.
She explained that while NIN enrolment remains free, fees for modifying personal details have increased, while verification charges have been reduced.
The DG said the move was to stop the extortion of citizens and make services more efficient. For instance, correcting date of birth now costs ₦28,574, up from ₦16,340, while NIN retrieval via USSD was raised from ₦20 to ₦50.
