The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed telecom providers to notify customers of major service outages, including causes, affected areas, and how long they’ll last.
In a statement on Sunday, the NCC said telecoms must also give at least seven days’ notice for planned disruptions and compensate users if outages exceed 24 hours.
Major outages include incidents like fibre cuts, vandalism, or network failures affecting large areas or many subscribers. Operators must report these via a public NCC portal, which also names those responsible for any damage.
The NCC says the move aims to improve transparency, protect telecom infrastructure, and keep customers better informed.
