The Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare has issued an urgent alert regarding a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, which has now spread to 29 countries, including Australia. The variant shows signs of increased transmissibility compared to other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.
In a circular sent to the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors, the ministry called for immediate activation of alert systems in hospitals nationwide. Healthcare providers are asked to maintain a heightened index of suspicion for COVID-like symptoms and to collaborate with stakeholders to share critical data. Enhanced monitoring protocols are recommended to track the new variant’s spread.
“The timely exchange of information is crucial for our response strategies,” said the Permanent Secretary. “Cooperation among all relevant entities is key to safeguarding public health.”
The ministry reassures stakeholders that it will provide ongoing updates and support during this critical period.
