The Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) has issued a directive banning the unauthorized use of drones in the North East region, encompassing Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states.

In a statement released by Air Commodore U.U. Idris, the Air Component Commander, the proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has raised significant security concerns. The directive highlighted that both government agencies and private individuals have been operating drones without proper authorization, posing risks to safety and security.

“The widespread use of drones for domestic and commercial purposes has led to serious security concerns. These concerns mainly arise from their potential use by non-state actors and criminal elements for subversive activities,” Idris said.

He added that unauthorized drone operations threaten military installations and critical national infrastructure (CNI), as has been observed in other conflict zones. A recent incident on January 7, 2025, involved the interception of a drone carried by a passenger aboard an NGO flight from Maiduguri to Monguno. The drone was confiscated, and an investigation is ongoing.

“These incidents reveal troubling trends of individuals disregarding safety and security protocols, which could lead to detrimental consequences,” Idris warned.

To ensure the security of aerial operations, OPHK has reiterated its responsibility for regulating and monitoring aerial platforms, including aircraft and drones, within the North East airspace. Idris emphasized the importance of strict compliance with the ban to maintain safety and security across the region.

“Breaches of this restriction, no matter how minor, will be treated with the utmost seriousness,” the directive stated. All operators have been urged to adhere strictly to the regulations for drone operations in the interest of public safety and national security.
