The Federal Government has revealed that Nigeria incurs an annual loss of over $1.1 billion due to malaria, a major setback to its economic growth and Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Advisory on Malaria Elimination in Nigeria (AMEN) in Abuja, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, emphasized that malaria represents a dual crisis—health and economic.

Nigeria accounts for 27% of global malaria cases and 31% of related deaths, with over 180,000 children under five succumbing to the disease in 2022 alone. Prof. Pate highlighted the launch of AMEN as a strategic step to mitigate malaria’s devastating impact on health and the economy.
