A Department of State Services (DSS) officer told a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), admitted to inciting attacks on police officers and operating an illegal radio station.

The witness, identified as BBB for security reasons, said Kanu founded the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and used unlicensed frequencies to broadcast messages that encouraged violence.

Led by prosecuting counsel Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the DSS official said the statement was taken in July 2021 after a directive from the Attorney General of the Federation. He added that Kanu read the letter, showed it to his lawyers, and voluntarily gave a recorded statement.

Efforts to submit the video and related documents were stopped after defence lawyer Kanu Agabi (SAN) argued that they had not received copies. The judge, James Omotosho, agreed and ruled they must be served first.

Earlier, another DSS witness admitted not knowing that eight of the 15 charges against Kanu had been dropped. The session also saw a brief dispute over legal representation and a relative of Kanu was barred from three sittings for streaming court proceedings live.

The trial continues on May 7.
