Workers at the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company have called off their five-day strike following intervention by Governor Sani. The protest, led by the National Union of Electricity Employees, had caused widespread power outages in Kaduna as well as in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi states.
Governor Sani convened a meeting at the state government house on Friday night with both union representatives and Kaduna Electric management. Expressing concern over the prolonged outages affecting residents and businesses, he urged both sides to resolve their differences. By the end of the meeting, the workers agreed to restore power immediately and suspend further actions while negotiations continue.
The strike began on February 3, 2025, when union members protested an alleged plan to sack 900 workers. However, Kaduna Electric later clarified that only 450 employees had been issued “services no longer required” notices, attributing the terminations to significant operational and financial challenges.
