Justice Ministry Plans N2bn Spending on Trips, Vehicles

The Federal Ministry of Justice has proposed a total expenditure of N2 billion for the procurement and maintenance of utility vehicles, as well as local and international travels, in the 2025 fiscal year.

According to the 2025 Appropriation Bill presented to the National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 18, the ministry headquarters alone plans to allocate N460 million for vehicles, fueling, and maintenance. Specifically, N350 million is earmarked for the purchase of utility vehicles, N110 million for fueling, and N45 million for maintenance.

Additionally, the ministry has budgeted N1.5 billion for travel expenses. This includes N700 million for local travel—largely for training and related activities—and N800 million for international trips.

It is noteworthy that these figures pertain solely to the ministry headquarters and exclude costs from the six agencies under its supervision. These agencies include the Nigerian Law Reform Commission, Legal Aid Council, Council of Legal Education, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, National Human Rights Commission, Regional Centre for International Arbitration, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and Nigerian Copyright Commission.

The proposed budget has raised questions regarding prioritization of spending, especially as the nation grapples with economic challenges. However, ministry officials argue that the allocations are necessary for effective operations and capacity building in the justice sector.

The Appropriation Bill is currently under review by lawmakers, who are expected to scrutinize the proposed expenditures before final approval.
