An Israeli airstrike on a residential building in Gaza’s Shujaiya district on Wednesday killed at least 20 people, according to Gaza’s civil defense agency. Over 40 others were injured in the attack, and efforts are still underway to search through the debris for more victims.
This attack comes after Israel resumed airstrikes on Gaza on March 18, ending a two-month ceasefire with Hamas. Attempts to negotiate a new ceasefire have so far failed. The health ministry in Gaza, run by Hamas, reported that at least 1,482 Palestinians have died since the airstrikes resumed, bringing the total death toll in the conflict to 50,846.
The war, which began after Hamas’s surprise attack in October 2023, has also resulted in the deaths of 1,218 Israelis, mostly civilians. Hamas has called for a ceasefire and continues to communicate with mediators, though no new proposals have been made.
Meanwhile, talks continue to secure the release of hostages taken during the Hamas attack. Of the 251 hostages, 58 remain in Gaza, including 34 confirmed dead according to the Israeli military.
