Israel and Hamas Reach Ceasefire Agreement to End 15-Month Conflict

Israel and Hamas have reached a pivotal ceasefire agreement, bringing an end to a protracted 15-month conflict that has left thousands dead and displaced millions in the Gaza Strip.

The truce, mediated by Egypt and Qatar with backing from the United Nations, comes after weeks of intense negotiations and international pressure to halt the devastating hostilities. Both parties agreed to the terms late Thursday night, with the ceasefire taking effect at midnight local time.

Under the agreement, Israel has committed to easing its blockade on Gaza to allow humanitarian aid and essential supplies into the region. In return, Hamas has pledged to cease rocket attacks on Israeli territories and maintain peace along the border.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres hailed the truce as a “critical step” toward peace. “This ceasefire offers hope for a reprieve from violence, but it is crucial that both sides uphold their commitments and work toward a sustainable resolution,” he said in a statement.

The 15-month conflict, one of the deadliest in recent history, saw heavy casualties on both sides. Palestinian officials reported over 10,000 deaths, many of them civilians, while Israeli authorities recorded more than 1,200 fatalities. The destruction of infrastructure in Gaza has left tens of thousands homeless, with hospitals overwhelmed by casualties and a dire shortage of medical supplies.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh described the agreement as a “victory for the Palestinian resistance” but emphasized the need for vigilance. “This ceasefire does not end our struggle for freedom and justice, but it is a moment to rebuild and strengthen our resolve,” he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a televised address, acknowledged the heavy toll of the conflict and reiterated Israel’s right to defend itself. “While we have achieved our objectives, we must remain prepared for any threats to our security,” he stated.

The agreement includes provisions for a prisoner exchange, with Israel set to release a number of Palestinian detainees in exchange for hostages held by Hamas. Further talks are expected to solidify the implementation of the deal and address long-term issues, including the status of Gaza and a potential roadmap for peace negotiations.

As the ceasefire takes effect, humanitarian organizations are mobilizing to deliver aid and support recovery efforts in Gaza. The international community has called on both parties to honour the agreement and work toward a durable peace that addresses the root causes of the conflict.
