The House of Representatives has turned down a proposed bill seeking to establish a single six-year term for the offices of President and State Governors.
During Thursday’s plenary session, the bill, sponsored by Rep. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and 33 co-sponsors, failed to pass its second reading. The proposal also included provisions for conducting all elections on a single day, rotating the presidency and governorship across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, and restructuring local government leadership.
Titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended)”, the legislation aimed to bring significant changes to Nigeria’s governance structure.
Despite its introduction and support from some lawmakers, the bill was met with strong opposition. When the Speaker, Tajuddeen Abbas, called for a voice vote, the majority response was a resounding “Nay,” leading to the bill’s rejection.
With this outcome, the House will not advance the proposed constitutional amendments for further legislative consideration.
