National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has raised concerns about the increasing threats to Nigeria’s telecommunications systems, banking platforms, power grids, military networks, and other critical infrastructure. Speaking on Monday, Ribadu highlighted the urgency of addressing these growing cyber risks, which also extend to transportation networks, national databases, election systems, and other vital assets.

During a workshop for policymakers and regulators organized by the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre within the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Ribadu underscored the pressing need for stakeholders to work together to safeguard these essential sectors. “Any disruption or failure of these critical assets could severely affect our national security, public health, safety, and the socio-economic stability of Nigeria,” he warned.

He pointed out that as the country continues to embrace technology, it is also facing a corresponding rise in cyber threats and risks to its critical information infrastructure. “We are now dealing with an increased risk of attacks on telecommunications systems, banking platforms, power and energy grids, military networks, transportation systems, national databases, elections, digital systems, and other crucial sectors,” Ribadu noted.

Beyond these, he also highlighted the prevalence of online financial scams and fraud perpetrated by both domestic and international actors, which have negatively impacted Nigeria’s economy and global reputation. “These threats are further compounded by risks such as the defacement of government websites, breaches of personal data, and the compromise of sensitive government communications,” he added.

Ribadu expressed concern about the rise of malicious online platforms being used for illicit fundraising, disinformation, and inciting violence. He warned that if these cyber threats continue unchecked, they could undermine critical national services, leading to widespread disruption. “There is no way a country like Nigeria can continue to function if telecommunications, electricity, banking systems, and other critical infrastructure are no longer operational,” he cautioned.

The workshop emphasized the importance of strengthening cybersecurity measures and building resilience within critical sectors to protect Nigeria from the evolving threats targeting its national infrastructure.
