The Federal Ministry of Health has revealed that glaucoma accounts for 16.7% of blindness cases in Nigeria.

Minister of State for Health, Iziaq Adekunle Salako, disclosed this during World Glaucoma Week, citing a survey that found 4.2% of Nigerians are blind. Represented by Dr. Michael Akpan, he described glaucoma as a “silent thief of sight” that progresses unnoticed until vision is severely impaired.

The ministry has launched National Glaucoma Screening and Treatment Guidelines to improve early detection and management. Nigerians are urged to get regular eye exams to prevent vision loss.
