Ogbonna Igbojionu has been released after spending 26 years on death row for unknowingly buying and reselling a stolen generator in Lagos.
He was 22 when arrested in 1999 and later sentenced to death without legal representation. His story gained national attention in 2025 after a viral video by activist Olumide Ogunsanwo, prompting Abia Governor Alex Otti to call for a case review.
Following investigations, Lagos State freed Ogbonna and two others wrongly convicted. A video of Ogbonna reuniting with his mother at the Abia Government House has since gone viral, renewing calls for criminal justice reform.
