The federal government has suspended a circular issued by the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission (NSIWC) that sought to review the allowances of medical and dental officers.

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) had issued a 21-day ultimatum on July 2, demanding its withdrawal and warning of a possible strike by July 23. NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, described the circular as a breach of earlier agreements, insisting that any changes must be through consultation.

Dr. Tope Osundara, President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), confirmed that the decision was reached at a meeting chaired by the Minister of Finance, who also leads the Presidential Committee on Salaries.

He said the circular has been suspended to allow further consultations with relevant associations.
