The Federal Government has revealed that over ₦8.8 billion was spent to repair and restore 128 vandalized transmission towers across the country.
The Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Engr. Suleiman Ahmed Abdulaziz, disclosed this during a quarterly power sector meeting in Abuja. He lamented the recurring issue of vandalism, where culprits apprehended and handed over to the police are often bailed and return to commit further crimes.
Abdulaziz highlighted challenges, such as requiring military escorts to restore destroyed towers, especially in conflict-prone areas like the Shiroro-Mando-Kaduna axis. He questioned how such circumstances hinder the delivery of reliable electricity to Nigerians.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, noted that the government is collaborating with the World Bank and the African Development Bank (ADB) to provide electricity to 50 million Nigerians by 2030.
