The federal government has confirmed new cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu, in Kaduna State, raising concerns over poultry health and food security.
Dr. Taiwo Olasoju, speaking on behalf of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, said the outbreak was detected on a layer farm with a 6.5% mortality rate. Affected birds showed symptoms such as swollen wattles, weakness, and greenish diarrhea.
Authorities have urged poultry farmers and market operators to strengthen biosecurity measures, report unusual bird deaths, and limit movement between farms to prevent further spread. The government also advised monitoring pets like cats and dogs in affected areas due to the potential risk of viral transmission.
