The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has raised alarms over the influx of substandard and unregistered sugar brands in Nigerian markets, predominantly smuggled from Brazil.
In a statement, the FCCPC highlighted brands such as Grupo Moreno, Terous, USI S. Joao, Alvean, and Arapora Bionergia as non-compliant with mandatory Vitamin A fortification requirements. These products also lack critical labelling details, including production and expiry dates, batch numbers, and NAFDAC registration.
The commission warned that the absence of Vitamin A fortification poses significant health risks, such as blindness and heightened infection vulnerability, especially among children and pregnant women. It urged consumers to remain vigilant and avoid unregulated products while advising distributors to adhere to proper standards to protect public health.
