#EndBadGovernance: IGP Says Minors Fainted ‘Deliberately’ in Court

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has claimed that the recent court incident where minors reportedly fainted ahead of their arraignment was staged. The minors, along with other protesters arrested during the #EndBadGovernance demonstration held from August 1 to August 10, appeared at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday.

During the proceedings, four individuals, including two minors, fainted and were subsequently taken to the hospital. Meanwhile, 114 protesters were granted bail set at ₦10 million each, with two sureties required in like amount. The fainting incident sparked a wave of criticism domestically and internationally.

In a statement signed by Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi on behalf of IGP Egbetokun, the police asserted that individuals reaching the legal age of criminal responsibility are fully accountable for their actions under Nigerian law, irrespective of their age. The IGP added that the accused face charges including destruction of public property and threats to national security.

“Today, an unusual incident in court saw six of the suspects abruptly faint, seemingly in a scripted manner to attract negative attention. Medical assistance was swiftly provided, underscoring the police’s commitment to the welfare of those in custody, regardless of the accusations,” Egbetokun stated.

Egbetokun reiterated the Force’s dedication to justice while also highlighting Nigeria’s approach, which aligns with international standards, on youth accountability in serious criminal cases. He referenced similar practices in other nations, including the United Kingdom, where age does not exempt individuals from facing legal consequences. The police assured the public that each case is handled with empathy, upholding the principles of human rights.

The police also disclosed that 76 other individuals have recently been arraigned on serious charges, including terrorism, arson, and treasonable felony, with specific allegations concerning public property damage and threats to national security. The police stressed that all legal protocols were observed throughout the detention and arraignment of these suspects to ensure fairness and adherence to the rule of law.

Egbetokun assured citizens that the Force will remain professional throughout the trial process and urged the public to remain unbiased as the case unfolds. He emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to justice, transparency, and respect for human dignity, aligning with best practices in handling such sensitive cases.
