Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, Nigeria’s new Minister of Education, has reversed the policy set by his predecessor, Professor Tahir Mamman, requiring students to be at least 18 years old to enter university.
The policy, which sparked significant debate, has been deemed by Alausa as counterproductive to reducing the number of out-of-school children nationwide. Addressing journalists on Tuesday, Alausa stated that the age requirement will revert to 16 years, with exceptions allowed for “gifted children.”
Alausa also announced a shift in Nigeria’s educational approach, setting a goal of 80% practical and 20% theoretical learning. Emphasizing the need for practical education to address rising unemployment, he highlighted plans for tertiary institutions to collaborate with private sector players to equip students with skills that unleash their potential and enhance employability.
Alausa, previously Minister of State for Health, assumed the Education Ministry role following a recent cabinet reshuffle that resulted in his predecessor’s exit.
