The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has raised alarm over increasing cases of drug abuse, prostitution, and other social vices at the Muna IDP camp in Borno State.
Speaking during a town hall meeting with camp residents on Wednesday, NEMA’s North-East Zonal Coordinator, Abdullahi Sirajo, called on parents and community leaders to take urgent steps to address the trend.
“Our meeting was productive. We discussed how to reduce drug abuse among youths, prostitution, and other challenges,” he said.
Sirajo, represented by NEMA’s Head of Operations in the Northeast, Manir Gidado, said the agency has begun a five-day pilot sensitisation programme aimed at improving disaster preparedness and promoting social stability.
The Muna camp currently shelters over 48,000 displaced persons from Mafa and Dikwa LGAs.
Some residents expressed concern about rising social problems, especially among children. “Our kids are left unguided and exposed to bad influences,” said community leader Nana Aisha. “We’re not enrolling them in school, and some parents even depend on them for income.”
