The flood that struck Mokwa, Niger State, has claimed 115 lives, with many people still missing, officials say. Over 300 homes were destroyed when the flood hit the town on Thursday.
Abdullahi Baba Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the rising death toll on Friday, adding that rescue teams are still searching for survivors.
Many families have been wiped out, and some travellers stopping in Mokwa were caught in the flood, with several yet to be identified. A mosque sheltering worshippers collapsed, trapping some inside.
Locals say the disaster’s full impact is still unclear, with many believed to have been swept into the River Niger through nearby valleys.
