Court Sets March 12 for Judgment on Wike, AEPB Over Arrest of Sex Workers

0

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled March 12, 2024, for judgment on a suit challenging the arrest and prosecution of women suspected of sex work by the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The Incorporated Trustee of Lawyers Alert Initiative filed the case, arguing that such actions by the AEPB are discriminatory and outside its statutory mandate. The plaintiffs are also challenging the labelling of women as “articles” during mobile court proceedings, describing it as a violation of constitutional rights.

Justice James Omotosho fixed the date after hearing arguments from both sides. The case raises questions about human rights and the extent of the AEPB’s powers.
