The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed Nigeria a 3-0 victory and full three points in their 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya.
CAF announced the decision on Saturday following significant travel disruptions faced by the Super Eagles during their trip for the return leg after winning the first match 1-0 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The Nigerian team encountered over 18 hours of delays, a redirected flight, and logistical challenges.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe, speaking after the 46th Ordinary General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, refrained from delving into specifics about the incident but promised decisive action. “The issue was thoroughly investigated, and appropriate steps have been taken,” Motsepe said, highlighting that such mistreatment has been ongoing for too long across African football.
While emphasizing that CAF would not tolerate such treatment of visiting teams, Motsepe said, “Too many stories have been told of national teams or clubs facing unnecessary delays at airports, being asked for non-existent documents.” He underscored the need for fairness and respect in football, stressing that every team should be treated with dignity.
CAF’s decision to fine Libya $50,000 and award the win to Nigeria is part of its efforts to curb poor treatment of visiting teams and ensure a level playing field in African competitions.
