Residents of Kaduna are beginning to see the return of electricity after a challenging 9-day blackout that left much of northern Nigeria in the dark. The restoration, confirmed by residents in Abakpa and Jinya Quarters, marks the first signs of relief after days of uncertainty.
A resident of Abakpa, Zainab Abdullahi, who shared her experience, expressed her relief, stating, “We’ve been without power for over a week, and it’s been difficult managing without electricity. The return of light today has brought a much-needed sense of normalcy.”
Another resident from Jinya Quarters, Muhibba, echoed similar sentiments.
The power outage, which began over a week ago, affected multiple northern states, including Kaduna, disrupting daily life and paralyzing small businesses reliant on a stable power supply. Many business owners struggled with the increased costs of running alternative power sources, and families faced difficulties with essential activities like food preservation and charging devices.
The blackout was linked to faults within the national grid, a persistent issue that has long plagued Nigeria’s power sector. The return of power is being celebrated cautiously, as residents hope this is not just a temporary fix but a step toward more consistent electricity.
Officials have yet to provide detailed information regarding the full restoration across all affected areas or address concerns about the potential for future disruptions. As power returns to more neighbourhoods, many are waiting to see if this signals the end of the blackout in other parts of northern Nigeria.
