The Federal Government has announced they reached an agreement with the organized labour on a new minimum wage structure. This was announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in Abuja on Thursday.

Idris, who addressed the press alongside the Presidents of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joseph Ajaero and President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, said the new minimum wage, a slight improvement on the ₦62,000 earlier proposed by the government, is expected to be transmitted to the national assembly soon.

“We are happy to announce today (Thursday) that both the Organised Labour and the Federal Government have agreed on an increase on the ₦62,000 minimum wage. The new national minimum that Mr President is expected to submit to the National Assembly is ₦70,000,” the minister said.

Recall, leaders of the organized labour had insisted on a ₦250,000 minimum wage which they say is the figure that is needed to cushion the effects of inflation and other economic challenges facing the country.
