Blackout Response: FG Considers Alternative Power Sources as Backup to National Grid

The Federal Government is evaluating alternative power sources to bolster the national grid and prevent future collapses, according to Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

During a meeting with stakeholders and the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) management at their Kano headquarters, Adelabu highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening electricity supply as part of a broader strategy to drive industrial growth and stimulate Nigeria’s economy. He noted that his engagement with key industry players aims to address the barriers hindering optimal power distribution, with particular focus on upgrading the nation’s transmission network.

Currently, the grid relies on transmission lines through the Shiroro and Jos corridors, which leaves northern Nigeria vulnerable to disruptions. “This radial system leaves the northern region at risk of electricity outages whenever issues occur along these lines,” he explained.

To counteract these vulnerabilities, Adelabu advocated for developing independent power sources within state metropolises to serve as additional support for the national grid. “Exploring alternative power sources as backup is essential to minimize risks of future grid collapses,” he stated, adding that a proactive approach will help protect against issues like vandalism and infrastructure failures.

He also urged state governments to implement effective plans for alternative electricity sources, encouraged distribution companies (Discos) to maintain reliable service, and called on consumers to make efficient use of electricity.
