The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) reported a staggering loss of over N6 billion during a 12-day power outage that disrupted business and social activities across its service areas in Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina states. In addition to revenue losses, the blackout also resulted in the vandalism of 70 transformers, further compounding the company’s challenges.
KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, announced that the company is implementing load shedding, and prioritizing industrial and commercial feeders to boost economic activity in Kano, a key industrial hub. The measure, Sani explained, aims to maintain consistent supply for major users, including high-value customers and significant employers of labour.
The outage, which stemmed from a fault on the 330kV transmission line, disconnected several northwestern and northeastern states from the national grid. Power restoration efforts continued throughout the blackout, with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) working to re-establish grid connectivity. By Wednesday, electricity was fully restored, and KEDCO began adjusting distribution to balance demand between industrial and residential areas across affected regions in the north.
