Governor Hyacinth Alia says Benue is “under siege,” as deadly attacks in the state have gone beyond farmer-herder clashes and now resemble acts of terrorism.
Speaking on Channels TV, he said 33 people were recently killed, on top of 73 others lost in earlier attacks across Katsina-Ala, Ukum, and Logo LGAs.
“What started as land disputes is now full-blown terrorism,” he said. “Heavily armed militias invade communities, kill residents, and take over.”
He warned that the crisis is threatening food security as most affected areas are key producers of rice, yams, and soybeans.
Alia said 17 IDP camps are currently active, with many displaced persons sheltering with relatives.
He also confirmed receiving complaints about the conduct of some security personnel and said troop rotations have been ordered.
The governor announced the creation of a Civil Protection Guard to support formal security efforts and urged citizens to unite in tackling the crisis.
