The last of the English contingent to this year’s elite European competition, the UEFA Champions League, have crashed out of the competition. North London giants and title chasers, Arsenal, lost narrowly to a very disciplined Bayern Munich side. The gunners came off a 2-2 draw at home last week, hoping to get something from Bayern on their turf but it was not to be as the German club, who lost the league title to Bayern Leverkusen over the weekend, stuck to a very tight routine to keep the English club at bay.

The game came to live early in the second half, when veteran midfielder, Joshua Kimmich, gave the home side the lead and that was enough to see off the tie as Bayern Munich’s defence remained resolute and blocked every attempt the gunners tried to unlock their defence.

Arsenal have shown signs of fatigue lately, a repeat of last season where they appear to lose their steam close to the end of the season. Their manager, Mikel Arteta, praised his side’s performance but noted more needed to be done to get his young side over the line.

The Gunners now turn their attention to the 6 remaining fixtures in the league in an attempt to salvage any hope of silverware this season.

Over in Manchester, Pep Guardiola’s side, as expected, dominated the match against Real Madrid but the Spanish side showed the world why they have excelled in the competition more than any other side. Madrid went ahead in the first half through Rodrygo but a second half strike from Belgian midfielder, Kevin DeBruyne brought the fixture level.

Nothing could settle the sides and the tie eventually went to penalties which Real Madrid won 5-3.

The unlikely hero of the night was Madrid’s third choice goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin.
