Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has temporarily relocated to Benue State following a series of deadly attacks that have claimed at least 270 lives since April.
He arrived Tuesday with top officers and met with Governor Hyacinth Alia in Makurdi. The governor described the visit as a message of hope, saying the army is stepping up efforts to restore peace.
Just on Sunday, 43 people were killed in Apa and Gwer West LGAs. Some women planned a protest but called it off over fears it might be hijacked by criminals.
Experts warn that relocation alone may not solve the problem and have called for a national security summit. Police say tactical teams have been deployed, but many residents still live in fear.
Governor Alia has vowed to act, calling the killings unacceptable and promising that joint forces will secure affected areas.
