The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that a road crash that occurred in Kwara state has claimed, at least, 19 lives (11 adult males, three adult females, three male children, and two female children) and left 5 others badly wounded. The corps marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this while addressing a press conference on Friday in Abuja. He said the accident occurred at Kanbi village, on the Olooru new Jebba road in Kwara state.
The corps marshal revealed that preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a result of excessive speed and wrongful overtaking and involved 2 vehicles; a blue Iveco trailer with no trace of registration and a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number LSD363YE.
Mohammed said: “a total of 25 people were involved, comprising 13 male adults, five female adults, two female children and five male children.”
Despite concerted efforts such as the establishment of an Inter-agency Joint Task Force and intensified public awareness campaigns, the FRSC expressed disappointment at the persistent disregard for road safety regulations among some drivers.
“It is therefore unfortunate that irrespective of all the efforts in place, some drivers have decided not to adhere to safety standards as such compromising the safety of innocent road users.
“In line with his 2024 agenda for a drastic reduction in road carnage, the Corps Marshal has directed Commanding Officers to intensify special patrol operations against these identified violations,” a spokesperson for the corps said.
