Following their release to Kaduna State Governor Malam Uba Sani, several former #EndBadGovernance detainees shared their experiences of confinement at Abuja’s Kuje Prison, where they endured two months on minimal food rations. Over 100 protesters, originally detained on treason charges after an August protest, were recently discharged in Abuja after a Federal High Court decision. Speaking to reporters, Hassan Muhammad from Kaduna described the ordeal as harsh, with detainees subsisting mainly on beans and garri.

Muhammad, arrested in August during the protest, recounted being moved from Kaduna’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to the Federal CID, then eventually to Kuje Prison. The conditions, he stated, were tough and food quality poor.

Fellow detainee Muhammad Abubakar from Zaria reflected on his detention, calling it a difficult but insightful experience. Meanwhile, Kaduna’s Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Rabi Salisu, encouraged the freed individuals to engage in community peace-building. She assured that the government would support their reintegration through empowerment and psychosocial services to help them re-establish their lives.
