The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has warned of escalating threats against Muslims in Nigeria’s South West, particularly targeting Yoruba communities, and has called on security agencies to intervene.
Professor Ishaq Akintola, Executive Director of MURIC, said in a press release that tensions are rising amid debates on Shari’ah law, with social media rife with incendiary messages. He specifically highlighted a recent statement by Ahmed Saliu Olokoju, who claims to be the Secretary General of the Yoruba Islamic Salvation Front, accusing Yoruba Muslims supporting Shari’ah of being “Fulani agents” and warning of a “holy war” against them.
Akintola stressed that such inflammatory rhetoric is dangerous and urged the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Security, and other relevant agencies to take swift action to prevent any outbreak of violence. He called on all stakeholders to work together to safeguard the lives and property of South West Muslims and maintain peace in the region.
