The House Committee on Constitution Review has received a proposal to establish 31 additional states in Nigeria.
Chairman Benjamin Okezie Kalu announced during a plenary session that the proposal outlines the creation of new states across all regions: 6 in the North Central, 4 in the North East, 5 in the North West, 5 in the South East, 4 in the South South, and 7 in the South West.
Some suggested names include Okun, Okura, and Confluence in Kogi; Benue Ala and Apa in Benue; along with new entities in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, and Lagos.
The committee emphasized that any new state must meet strict constitutional criteria, including a three-quarters majority support in the National Assembly and proper referrals to state and local government assemblies.
Proposals are to be submitted in three hard copies to the committee’s secretariat in Abuja, with electronic copies sent via email. The panel reiterated its commitment to considering only those proposals that fully comply with the constitutional guidelines.
