In response to the Lagos State government’s ban on single-use plastics set for January 2025, major supermarkets in Lagos have started selling nylon bags to customers. Shoppers now pay between N150 and N500 for the bags, replacing the free plastic ones previously provided.
Leading retailers such as Shoprite and Bokku have already implemented this change—Shoprite stopped offering nylon bags on January 1, while Bokku initiated the switch in 2024. At Addas Mall in Agidingbi Ikeja, the policy will be enforced from February 1, 2025.
A shopper at a Spar outlet in Ikeja remarked, “I paid N150 for this nylon. It’s clearly part of the state’s efforts to curb single-use plastics.” This move is part of a broader government initiative aimed at reducing environmental waste by phasing out disposable plastics and related items like sachet water packaging.
