An intense fire outbreak, Monday morning, destroyed wares and some other valuable properties in one of the two main markets serving Yola town, the Adamawa state capital.
Eyewitnesses describe the carnage they saw unfold, praising the response time of fire services but lamented that the scope was too large and the inferno spread too quickly for there to be any meaningful containment.
They said some of the traders who kept the proceeds of their sales from the previous trading day, Sunday, now have huge regrets for not taking their cash home.
The cause of the fire has not been determined at the time of filing this report but the people around the market when the fire broke out quickly ruled out any link to electricity as the entire place was in a blackout throughout the time.
The state’s deputy governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, in a sympathy visit to the market told the affected traders that the government is with them in their tragic moments and promised all necessary support to get their businesses back running.
Thankfully, no human casualties were recorded.
