The federal government of Nigeria is set to launch three (3) new national identity cards in May this year and has a target of providing them for about 104 million citizens across the country.
The three new national identity cards planned by the national identity management commission (NIMC) include a bank-enabled national ID card, a social intervention card, and an optional ECOWAS national biometric identity card.
The technical adviser, media, and communications to the director-general of NIMC, Ayodele Babalola, who disclosed the information said Nigerians would start getting the three national ID cards within a month or two after the proposed launch.
“Digital/virtual versions of all cards will also be available for those preferring digital formats, albeit with limited functionalities,” Babalola stated, emphasising the government’s drive towards digital inclusivity.
He, however, said the launch date was subject to the approval of the presidency.
The news is generating mixed reactions from Nigerians, especially those who went through several hoops trying to follow similar initiatives by past governments. Some also argue the process may be redundant giving the availability of NIN and BVN identification numbers.
