The Federal Government has dismissed claims of a 65% electricity tariff increase, saying media reports misrepresented the facts.
Presidential Energy Adviser, Olu Arowolo Verheijen, clarified on X that following the 2024 tariff adjustments, current rates cover 65% of supply costs, with government subsidies bridging the gap.
She emphasized that rather than increasing tariffs, the government is prioritizing improved power supply, reducing outages, and protecting low-income households.
Verheijen also highlighted the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), which aims to roll out 7 million prepaid meters to end estimated billing and enhance transparency.
She added that the N200bn monthly electricity subsidy currently benefits wealthier Nigerians, prompting plans for a targeted subsidy system to support low-income households.
